Rhode Island is for Lovers: 6 Romantic Rhode Island Getaways

When was the last time you took a weekend (or maybe a full week?) for just you and your sweetie? Parenthood, work, commitments, and life in general do a darn fine job of blocking any plans we try to make to celebrate romance. It’s time to take control, and commit to one of these top romantic Rhode Island getaways (seriously, make it a week) with the one you call ‘honey.’

What Makes Rhode Island Getaways Romantic?

Rhode Island offers a wealth of fun cities, museums, performance centers, beach experiences, lovely drives, and decadent inns and resorts, so that your little getaway can make up for years of putting romance in the back seat! Here are some of our favorite Rhode Island getaway spots, and some of the mushiest couples attractions therein.

Providence

The real question is: what isn’t a perfect date spot in Providence? Small enough to easily get around by foot, and blessed with a diverse food and bar scene, there are so many options for a fun date night. Grab a bite and a bottle of wine at a waterfront restaurant, such as the romantic farm-to-table favorite XO Cafe. Then, take a stroll through India Point Park, or if you plan your getaway just right, head to the waterfront for a Providence WaterFire spectacle. When it’s time to turn in for the night, Providence has more romantic lodging options than you could dream of! Keep your eye out for romantic inn and hotel packages, too, as they frequently offer lavish, love-themed add-ons.

Warwick

Like so many towns in the state, Warwick boasts miles of sandy beaches, two historic lighthouses, and working marinas. Get nautical and head out on a chartered tour of the coast! Try your hand at sport fishing and scuba diving (they say nothing sparks romance like a good adrenaline rush), or maintain that slow, vacation spirit, booking a relaxing tour and dinner cruise. If you’re really feeling wild, it’s worth digging down deep, finding your inner kid, and gettin’ bouncy at Launch Trampoline Park. Warwick has good reason to make it onto our list of favorite Rhode Island getaways.

Newport

Spend the day tasting Newport’s finest craft brews at Newport Storm Brewery. Not swayed by the delicately hopped and deeply malted flavors of these killer suds? Get in touch with your inner pirate and swash down some fine New England rum Newport Distilling Company. Keep that warm, rum-induced spirit going and make dinner reservations at Tallulah on Thames (but make sure they’re open during your getaway), or get foody at the Newport Restaurant Week, which typically happens in late fall. The next day, spend a leisurely afternoon soaking up the stunning views along the Cliff Walk, where the natural beauty of the Rhode Island coast is paired with iconic Newport architecture (a.k.a., mansions galore). Retire to a decadent Newport inn or hotel, and let the sound of the ocean lull you to romance.

Narragansett

If you believe high-adrenaline activities lead to fiery relationships, take no substitutes for Snappa Charters and their caged shark diving expedition. Yes, you read that right. If that’s the way you want your Rhode Island getaway to go, you could always schedule a guided, chartered fishing trip — and hopefully get lucky enough to reel in some dinna! After you’ve built a fire and grilled your fresh caught haddock on the beach, treat yourselves to a “quiet” evening at any of the extraordinary local inns or hotels.

Watch Hill

Beach. Beach. Beach. Taylor Swift. Beach. Spend the day splashing in the surf like kids, check out the antique carousel at Watch Hill Beach, head over to East Beach and catch a glimpse of T-Swift’s oceanfront mansion, or grab your waterskis and head to Nappatree Point for a water sport adventure. As darkness falls, snuggle into your beach chairs and watch the sun set over the Atlantic. Finally, when the day is done, Watch Hill offers a range of upscale accommodations for your getaway, all with views to stun!

Block Island

A famous Rhode Island getaway hotspot, Block Island lives up to the hype. Arrive by ferry (or a float plane if you’re feeling fancy) and rent a moped built for two. As an island made for getting away from it all, you can pick your “poison” — a couples massage at an eco-spa, fresh air and ocean vistas from beautiful trails and walkways, or a beach chair. Picturesque lighthouses and a lovely farmer’s market are among some of the top couples attractions on this lovely little slice of heaven. Block Island’s inns and hotels are ready and waiting to host you, and they’ll make sure that this rare romantic getaway is one to remember.

It may be small, but Rhode Island packs a whole lot of fun and romance within its borders. Don’t forget this New England gem when choosing your next (or perhaps first) romantic R.I. getaway weekend.
