Four Epic New England Fourth of July Celebrations

The Fourth of July is upon us, and where better to celebrate than the birthplace of the U.S.? Here in New England, we’re all set to fire up our grills, march in parades, and channel our inner patriots. Independence Day wouldn’t be complete, of course, without the oohs and aahs that accompany a magnificent fireworks display. If you’re ready to belt the National Anthem at the top of your lungs, check out these four New England Fourth of July celebrations — they’re some of the best in the country.

Boston, MA: The Boston Pops Firework Spectacular

This two-day Fourth of July celebration takes revelry to the next level with a massive concert by the Boston Pops Orchestra. Pack a picnic and head to the shore of the Charles River, where the DCR Hatch Shell is the center of the party. Festivities kick off with a concert on the evening of July 3, but fireworks fanatics will have to wait till after dark on the holiday itself.

For the best experience, we recommend spending the night at a Boston hotel since the fireworks tend to finish just after 11 p.m. If you can't make the drive to Boston on July 4th, though, sit back and check your local television listings for full coverage of the concert and fireworks display.

Montpelier, VT: Montpelier Alive

Best Choice Reviews calls Montpelier the best small-town downtown in America for its picturesque shops, restaurants, and welcoming charm. It's only fitting that such an all-American town would go all out for the Fourth of July. The annual celebration packs the State House  lawn with activities including a Kid Zone, free yoga, and a Zumba dance party. The whole town joins the fun with Free Museum Day at the Vermont Historical Society, Family Fun Day at the Montpelier Rec Department pool, and a 4th of July Parade.

The celebration concludes with a family friendly concert and a spectacular fireworks show after dark. Local tip: the homemade ice cream in this town is to die for. Head into one of the scoop shops downtown and look for flavors made with Vermont maple syrup.

The Fourth of July in Montpelier is a celebration worth extending beyond just one day — check out these Vermont inns and bed & breakfasts nearby.

The celebration goes into the evening with Portland Symphony Orchestra’s Patriotic Pops Concert followed by the fireworks spectacular around sunset.

If you’ve never been to Portland this is a great opportunity to celebrate the holiday and see why so many people love the city. Consider staying a couple nights to explore what Maine has to offer.

Bristol, RI, Fourth of July Celebration
