Music, theater, spas, museums, galleries, historic homes, parades, cruises, sightseeing—Portland is teeming with activities. Browse the details and links below for a sample of everything Portland Maine has to offer.

Lighthouse, Lobsters & More

Ask any Mainer and they’ll tell you there is SOO much more to Portland and Maine than lighthouses and lobsters. . .and that is very true. But, hey, lighthouses and lobsters are a fun place to start.

1. Bike, View & Nibble. Rent a bike from Gorham Bike & Ski (207-773-1700), located close to our Portland Maine boutique hotel, and peddle 5 miles down to glorious Fort Williams Park for panoramic views of Casco Bay and a tour of Portland Head Light -- one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. While there, grab the area’s best lobster roll from the Bite Into Maine (207-420-0294) food truck (Original, Picnic, Wasabi, Curry or Chipotle) and nosh while you soak in the view. Classic Maine.

2. Be a Lobsterman. Try your hand at hauling in a crustacean. On Lucky Catch Cruises (207-761-0941) you’ll see how these tasty treats get from the bottom of the ocean to your dinner plate and learn about lobster habits, conservation efforts and the difference between hardshells, shedders, shorts, culls and keepers.

Old Port Walking Tours

Portland offers many tasty and intriguing ways to experience the Old Port. Sip and savor your way around or learn about the spooky and weird.

1. Wine Wise Events. Recently named the top attraction in Portland on Trip Advisor, these wine strolls combine tasting, touring and vino education. Owner/tour guide/wine professional, Erica Archer, is a joy to be around and a font of information. Wine sails and other events also available. Email Wine Wise.

2. Maine Foodie Tours (207-233-7485). Stroll the Old Port, sample delectable, Maine-inspired foods and obtain a behind-the-scenes look at those who craft these culinary delights. This award-winning company also offers culinary trolley and boat tours.

3. Maine Cocktail Tours (207-200-5069). Saunter the streets of historic downtown with five stops along the way to sample some of Portland’s most famous cocktail creations. Learn about the history of the cocktail, the old stories of Portland’s past and how the foundations of prohibition began at City Hall.

4. Wicked Walking Tours (888-718-4253)  Funny, irreverent (yet G-rated) and a little creepy, this short (one-hour), but detail-packed tour is fun for all ages. Learn about Portland's ghosts and weird past from Gordon, the terrific - if a bit strange - tour guide.

Sample Local Brews

Over the last 5 years, Portland has become a hot bed of brewers and distillers of craft beers, hard cider, mead and even hard liquors, such as gin, rye and rum. Sample them responsibly -- let someone else do the driving!

The Maine Brew Bus (207-200-9111). You can't miss the bright green bus! Tours vary and are all inclusive -- providing transportation to and from Maine’s award-winning breweries as well as smaller, upcoming breweries, pub snacks, a brewery tour, beer trivia, fun and of course BEER!

Maine Beer Tours (207-553-0898) Both educational and fun, this company answers burning questions, such as  "What's the difference between an Ale and a Lager?" and "Why are some beers are darker than others and what exactly is a hop?" while visiting local craft brewers.

Get On The Water

Whatever your speed, it's always a good idea to enjoy the water in a coastal town like Portland Maine!

1. Come Sail Away. Portland has not one, but two terrific sailing companies offering cruises through Casco Bay. Portland Schooner Company (207-766-2500) sails two storied wooden schooners built in the early 20th century. Afternoon and all-day sails available, including a "sail and tail" with a lobster bake included. Maine Sailing Adventures (207-749-9169) sails a Maine-built windjammer, Frances. Unwind and absorb as you take in Portland’s working waterfront, and the beautifully rugged islands just beyond. Ask about the company's popular sunset sails.

 2. Ride the Duck. Tour the Old Port and the bay in one, convenient vehicle! The Downeast Duck (800-979-3370) covers both land and sea, including Portland's working waterfront, the Casco Bay Islands and marine wildlife.

 3. Paddle Yourself. See the bay up close and personal from a kayak. Paddle out to Fort Gorges and explore the deserted Civil War-era fort, weave between ferries and sail boats along the waterfront, challenge yourself with a paddle across to the Bug Light lighthouse in South Portland. Bring your own or rent kayaks from Portland Paddle (207-370-9730).

Artistically Inclined

With a premier art college right in town, an acclaimed small art museum and a monthly art walk, Portland is quite the mecca for art enthusiasts.

Portland Museum of Art (207-775-6148). The Museum's small but insanely well-curated collection contains fine and decorative works of art from acclaimed American and New England artists, such as Frederic Edwin Church, Marsden Hartley, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and Andrew Wyeth, as well as major pieces from European masters Edgar Degas, René Magritte, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, among others.

Space Gallery (207-828-5600). Space is a nonprofit contemporary arts venue that fosters true creativity through its mission to present contemporary, emerging and unconventional art, artists and ideas. Formats include visual art exhibits, film screening, music and performance art, and public forums and collaborations.

First Friday Art Walk. Held all over Portland on the first Friday of every month, the arts walk turns the whole city into a gallery. The library, cafes, coffee shops and stores, as well as local galleries, get into the act and exhibit new artistic works from local artists and from those "from away."

Enjoy the Music

Portland Symphony Orchestra. (207-773-6128). With critically acclaimed performances and broad community engagement, the PSO is widely regarded as one of the top symphony orchestras of its size in the country.

State Theater. The city's largest non-stadium venue, State is an beautiful, historic theater that brings in nationally and internationally popular acts, such as Keane, Josh Ritter, Iron & Wine, Silversun Pickups, Goo Goo Dolls, MGMT, and Michael Franti, among many, many others. Seats 1600.

Port City Music Hall. (207-899-4990). A 500-seat venue with great acoustics and a hip vibe, Port City Music Hall attracts eclectic acts, such as Keller Williams, OK GO, Calexico, Ghostface Killah, and Enter the Haggis, among many, many more.

One Longfellow Square (207-761-1757). A 200-seat venue presenting folk, jazz, celtic, basque, and nationally beloved singer-songwriters. This venue is super-close to tour Portland boutique hotel.

Wadsworth-Longfellow House (207-774-1822). This remarkable family made significant contributions to the political, literary, and cultural life of New England and the United States. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow grew up in the house and went on to become one of the most famous men of his time.

The World's a Stage

Portland Stage Company. (207-774-0465) Portland's largest theater company offers a diverse range of productions in a large, comfortable theater located quite close to The Danforth. Each production is fully crafted theater, including original set design and construction, costume design and production, lighting and sound design.

Good Theater. (207-885-5883) A truly stellar local company, Good Theater produces consistently wonderful shows - often Broadway and Off-Broadway hits and Tony winners, as well as regional and Maine premiers. Productions range from dramas, to comedies, to musicals.

Shop. Shop. Shop.

In fact, our newly renovated Nantucket hotel is a block from the heart of town and a six-minute walk to the harbor.

Visit and discover an impeccably designed Nantucket boutique hotel offering exceptional rooms and amenities; the ultimate relaxing “Nantucket getaway” courtyard; an all-day coffee cafe; the latest tech amenities; and exceptional (yet unobtrusive) service.

We look forward to welcoming you to 76 Main — a Nantucket Boutique Hotel, and helping you enjoy the good life that is time on Nantucket.

Dining well on Nantucket is never a problem. Nantucket restaurants offer everything from “five napkin” burgers to the buzziest of haute cuisine. Check out our favorite Nantucket restaurants:

Flip Flops Fine
  • Brotherhood of Thieves (508-228-2551). Flowing taps, big juicy burgers, and killer fish and chips lead the list at this 1840’s whaling bar. As Nantucket restaurants go, everybody knows (and goes) to “the brotherhood.”
  • Black Eyed Susan’s (508-325-0308). Intimate and unpretentious, this tiny island favorite’s fare is truly inspired and gloriously fresh.
  • Center Street Bistro (508-228-8470). Stroll in wearing flip flops or a tie and get the same friendly welcome. Uncomplicated Nantucket restaurant with creative cuisine. BYOB.
  • Met on Main (508-325-5111). Great grilled dishes and a lively back patio make the “Met” perfect for post beach cocktails. Unique Tartare Bar is the cafe’s answer to sushi and offers anywhere from six to ten selections.

See & Be Scene
  • Cru Oyster Bar. (508-228-9278) Expansive water-side glamour scene where the glitteratti gather. A feast for the eyes as well as the mouth with extensive raw bar, elite wine list and interiors by Gautheir Stacy.
  • Corazon Del Mar (508-228-0815). A latin-inspired love letter to food with a playful vibe and colorful surroundings (both decor and the people!) Scallop ceviche is truly sublime.
  • Dune. (508-228-5550) Pop your collar and throw on your Nantucket Reds — the locals are out and playing at Dune. Great bar scene and solid menu featuring day-caught seafood. Try the Hot & Dirty — Thai chili-infused vodka with a splash of olive juice.
  • LoLa 41 (508-325-5001). Upscale finger food sets the tone – think exquisite sushi rolls, spicy pork bahn mi and mouth-watering burgers in foie gras dipping sauce. Bubbling with local gossip and music, eating at this Nantucket restaurant makes you want to bob your head while licking your fingers clean of hoisin and ginger-laced BBQ sauce.
  • The Pearl (508-228-9701). Nantucket meets Miami with cool white interior, tropical fish tanks and Asian-influenced menu. Select, but excellent, cocktail and wine list.

Nights for Celebration
  • American Seasons (508-228-7111). It’s about the food. Imaginative “haute humble” cuisine features what’s seasonal, local and lush. Exceptional American wine list. Consistently the most buzzed about Nantucket restaurant. Hands down.
  • Company of the Cauldron (508-228-4016).Cape Cod Life said it best, the Cauldron exudes a “darkly handsome, romantic-as-a-novel” atmosphere. Limited menu features daily special items prepared with care and skill.

Tried & True
  • Brant Point Grill (508-228-2500). Waterside favorite features the classics: steaks done right, lobster and cherished dishes of New England seafood.
  • Oran Mor (508-228-8655). Inspired simplicity showcasing native seafood, fresh local produce and naturally raised meats from select farms.
  • Straight Wharf (508-228-4499). A great place to end the day, Straight Wharf exudes vintage Nantucket restaurant. Serving re-interpreted summer classics and foods that speak of Nantucket culture.

Our Nantucket hotel has undergone a complete renovation! Rooms in the Main House are classic and tailored, rooms in ourGuest House are larger and more relaxed. A vineyard vines suite brings the “good life” appeal of the preppy clothier to life. All guest rooms feature a thoughtful blend of bold fabrics, modern furnishings, eclectic accents and sophisticated amenities. Each offer plush linens, iPad 3, Apple TV, iPod docking station, and much more.

Our Nantucket Hotel’s interior design is a key part of our brand – live life well. We encourage our guests to feel as they are staying at an upscale Nantucket home rather than a cookie cutter hotel or a stuffy bed and breakfast. We’ve curated the interiors to feel like a sophisticated personal collection – from the gallery wall of influential and intriguing Nantucket locals to curated bookshelves in the lounge of Nantucket books and objects. The rooms are designed to feel as if you are staying in the guest room at a friend’s home filled with comfortable, warm and personal details.

Rather than incorporate the “Nantucket look” with overly themed beach and nautical furnishings we’ve remained more subtle and refined. Texture plays an important role in bringing in the natural Nantucket environment – shiplap wainscoting, grass cloth walls, and sea grass rugs all set an important tone in the space. Ask us more about the design and our interior designer, Rachel Reider, We love to talk about them!

Home to spectacular coastal scenery, awe-inspiring architecture, a thriving waterfront downtown, and welcoming hospitality, Newport, Rhode Island is considered by many to be a shining gem in the coastal crown of New England.

In the late 1800's, America's wealthiest families chose Newport as their premiere resort destination. Today, visitors marvel at the magnificent Gilded Age mansions they built on Bellevue Avenue. Regarded by many as the grandest of Newport's treasures, this wide, tree-lined avenue is lined by Gothic Revival cottages, shingle-style houses, and opulent French and Italian-style palaces. The mansions, which bear notable names such as The Breakers, Marble House, Astors' Beechwood, Belcourt Castle, and Rough Point, are now open for tours, and are always a impressive experience!

Spectacular special events throughout the year offer something for every taste! The Newport Music Festival (July) annually brings in classical musicians for concerts in the magnificent setting of the mansions. The Schweppe's Great Chowder Cook-Off (June) appeals to food lovers looking to celebrate the flavor of a seaside city. The legendary JVC-Jazz Festival Newport (August) annually draws crowds for stellar performances in a historic fort beside the sea. In February crowds celebrate the season with ice-carvings and sleigh rides during Winterfestival, and in October the city comes alive with Oktoberfest!

Topping off the grand allure of the mansions and the sea, it is often the simple pleasures that make Newport such a remarkable destination. A stroll on the Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile walking path that winds between the sprawling lawns of the Newport mansions and the pounding surf of the Atlantic, is a one of a kind experience. An afternoon spent downtown wandering the cobblestone wharves is sure to turn up an exciting discovery in a unique shop or fantastic restaurant. And the hospitality of Newport's quaint historic inns and comfortable hotels, is welcoming enough to make visitors extend their stay! A charming seaside city with an intriguing past and vibrant spirit, Newport, Rhode Island has the unique ability to offer something for everyone, while still dazzling visitors with special amenities that could not be found in any other destination!
