The original house was aptly named “Butternut Cottage” for the abundance of butternut trees on the property. It featured three steeply pitched cross-gables, a steep gambrel roof line, room layout and side chimneys which blend elements of late 18th century American colonial architecture, with English and Dutch influences typical of Berkshire and Hudson Valley homes of the day.

It has been lovingly tended for and now maintains historical integrity combined with modern amenities.

We believe that the art of a great meal lies in the balance between brilliant and unpretentious. That dishes should be memorable - and inspired by regional gifts. With locally grown ingredients, like Vermont lamb and just-picked greens. Organic wherever possible. Meats that are farm-raised, without hormones or unethical practices.

At Topnotch Resort, you'll find that art showcased daily, in dining experiences that consistently bring a fresh, approachable attitude. And celebrate the rich talent of Vermont's local cheese makers, farmers and culinary artisans.

Where New England dining is at its best, you'll find us. Topnotch in every way.

Norma's

A favorite gathering spot

A room, with a view. And the unspoken welcome of a warm, friendly bistro with an open kitchen. Norma’s, the signature restaurant of the resort, is a favorite gathering spot for guests, providing almost magical views of the mountains and imaginative dining experiences. Fusing contemporary fare and a casual atmosphere, Norma’s pays homage to Vermont fresh ingredients, seasonal inspirations, world class wines, and service, paced to please. Open your menu and anticipate greatness.

Buttertub

Everyone's at home

A visit to the Buttertub, with its rustic bar, fireplace and big screen TV, is an invitation to relax. From its historied past as an après ski spot to its modern place as a popular destination for a cocktail or local brew, the Buttertub is full of great character. In season, like its big sister Norma’s, The Buttertub Bistro features local, organic ingredients on a casual fare menu that marries favorites and finds.

A room just for you

The room you retreat to at night should be as divine as the stay itself. Each room at our resort has been designed to reflect this notion. Charming and well-appointed, all provide a personal retreat that blends country luxury with thoroughly modern touches. Sink-into-slumber beds. Complimentary Wi-Fi. Marble baths. The most favored of amenities. Just as you’d expect it.

Beyond appointments, we know the most important thing we can offer in our rooms is choice. Cozy rooms reminiscent of a European country manor. Romantic suites with fireplaces. Two- and three-bedroom resort homes with sundecks, kitchens and incredible views. At Topnotch, you’ll find a room that’s just for you – and for whatever your vacation agenda includes.

Like all of our hotel, your room reflects the touches our intimate scale uniquely affords. A favorite book by your bedside. The option of breakfast in bed. Bath salts (your favorite!) to enhance your soak. Robes to fit our youngest guests. Anything else? It’s a phone call away. And our pleasure. To us, your every comfort is important – and your room should be the perfect start of an ideal Vermont vacation experience.

Start your day with a wonderful Breakfast. Each morning our guests enjoy a full, hot breakfast which is served usually in our dining room at our mid-century 12 person dining table. On occasion, breakfast is served in the Living Room or Sun Room, and in the warmer months sometimes on the canopied terrace overlooking the gardens. Our sumptuous three-course breakfast starts with fruit juice, home made breads or muffins and a specially prepared fruit dish. A tantalizing hot entrée is then presented to you to give your taste buds an early morning treat. The menu of the day might include Sweet Pepper Scrambled Eggs, Breakfast Casserole, Ginger Pancakes with Lemon Sauce, Pain Perdu (French Toast) with local Mad River Valley Maple Syrup, Asparagus filled Crêpes or Granny's Cheesey Soufflé.

There are excellent restaurants to choose from in the Mad River Valley for dinner, and all are owned by the people you will meet when you dine there.  We take great pride that almost all the businesses in the Valley are locally owned and operated.  Many of the restaurants focus on local ingredients.  We have a few favorites, which include The Common Man, just a mile or two from the B&B. You will dine in a barn that is over 150 years old, and the soaring hand hewn rafters of the timbered interior are lit by crystal chandeliers, soft candlelight, and a huge open-hearth manor fireplace in season. Dining is elegantly casual and casually elegant, definitely romantic, and is applauded by Vermonters and visitors alike. The restaurant has earned scores of prestigious awards.  We offer a special $99 per couple all inclusive price for our guests which includes a full choice from the menu - all you have to pay in addition is your bar bill.

The Mad River Valley is the perfect place to relax: beautiful scenery year round, no traffic lights, no fast food, and with all restaurants and lodging locally owned and operated. Tranquility awaits you, yet with so many things to do and see! Not to mention the many great restaurant choices close by for an enjoyable dinner each evening.

West Hill House is only one mile from Sugarbush skiing, golfing and tennis resort and adjacent to its Robert Trent Jones Sr. championship golf course - and just seven miles from the Mad River Glen co-operatively owned ski area. We're off the beaten path, but close to the center of Warren and Waitsfield with all their restaurants, shopping and artisans, and in the midst of outdoor recreation beyond imagination. It's a great base from which to explore and enjoy all of Central Vermont.

With warm weather hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, canoeing, golf and tennis, soaring, spectacular foliage season autumn colors and wintertime downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and sleigh riding all nearby, Sugarbush and the Mad River Valley is a great place to visit at any season of the year! And don't forget the Mad Marathon and the other events of the Vermont Festival of the Great Outdoors in July, then the month long Vermont Festival of the Arts in August.

About the 1846
History at Your Table
A 19th century tavern. A 21st century legacy.

Once a popular stagecoach stop, the 1846 Tavern and Restaurant at the West Dover Inn continues an important American tradition begun over 160 year ago. Breakfast

Breakfast is where Breakfast on the Connecticut gets its name. From our spacious kitchen comes a full, hearty New England breakfast offering each morning from 8:00 am to 9:30 am. The day begins with the enticing aroma of fresh-brewed coffee made with pure water from our deep artisan well or a choice from our array of teas and cocoa. Our sun-drenched dining room awaits with an array of fresh fruit, juice, cereals, yogurt and freshly baked scone, muffin or coffeecake.  Then a tough decision, cinnamon French toast or a vegetable omelet, buttermilk waffles or southwestern frittata, blueberry pancakes or asparagus puff with vegetable confetti. The New England breakfast choices are endless and all are made with the finest ingredients using as many locally grown items as possible.
Our gourmet New England breakfast is served from 8:00 am to 9:30 am but we will gladly accommodate an early breakfast upon request.
