Summer Weekend Getaways from Boston: Cape Cod, Mass.

The classic getaway from summertime in Boston is a trip "down the Cape." With smooth, sandy beaches, miles of boardwalk, gorgeous dunes, charming towns, and coastal flare, it isn’t hard to see why. Drive just 75 miles from Boston for a stay in Falmouth, Massachusetts, or head farther down the Cape and enjoy visiting Chatham, Mass. Couples looking to let their hair down a bit more should venture all the way out to Provincetown, Mass., the tip of the Cape Cod peninsula. Provincetown bed and breakfasts, nightlife, and scenery make for a lively yet romantic weekend away.

North ConwayFall Weekend Getaway from Boston: White Mountains, NH

While fall in Boston is lovely in its own right, true autumnal beauty awaits in the rugged mountains and wooded valleys of New Hampshire. The scenic mountain town of North Conway, just 130 miles north of Boston, is perfectly situated for a romantic stay in the White Mountains. Here, the hearty wilderness of northern New England contrasts with the refined elegance of colonial architecture. Couples can enjoy fall foliage from the comfort of the grounds of their White Mountains inn or venture out for some spectacular hiking, walking, or biking. Timeless favorites are Mount Washington and the Franconia Ridge.

Winter Weekend Getaway from Boston: Green Mountains, VT

New Englanders know to face long, cold, snowy winters head-on. Staying cooped up in your own home might be warm, but it's no way to spend the whole winter. A weekend getaway into the great outdoors is the best cure for the winter blues. Vermont is a wonderful destination for a winter weekend away with its premier ski resorts, heavenly snowshoeing, and cozy postcard communities. Spend a few nights at a bed and breakfast in Manchester, Vt., just minutes from Stratton Mountain and Mount Snow. Take a day off from the slopes and shop the downtown, where country classics share Main Street with designer outlet stores. If Manchester doesn’t suit you, take a winter getaway to Woodstock, Vt., for an idyllic small town experience. Either Vermont community promises a picture perfect landscape, outdoor activities, and romantic evenings by the fireplace. Couples that don’t mind driving a bit more will love the ski town of Stowe as well!

Spring Weekend Getaway from Boston: Newport, R.I.

Once things have thawed and the buds start to return to the trees, head just 70 miles south of Boston to Newport, Rhode Island, for a romantic springtime getaway. Though the ocean will still be a bit cold for swimming, the weather is great for sailing, boating, biking, and wandering along the seaside. Plus, hotels will be more affordable outside of peak summer season and the Gilded Age architecture will be just as marvelous. Take long walks with your loved one and enjoy gourmet cuisine and well preserved history, not to mention the many culture and arts events that fill each weekend in Newport, R.I. Regardless of the season, weekend getaways from Boston are never far from reach. Pick a spot, load up the car, and get out of town with your special someone. Whether you return with sand in your bag and a suntan, ski-helmet hair and a runny nose, or mud and leaves under your hiking boots, you’ll be happy you took a weekend away from Boston for yourself and your partner.
