Protecting the Lagoon Pond
The Lagoon Pond Association was formed in 1989 to protect the waterway. The organization has been a driver of change, helping neighboring towns improve septic systems and reduce fertilizer use. It also manages initiatives for continuous monitoring of water quality and the reintroduction of critical eelgrass back into the pond.
The Association also hosts a Speaker Series with local and off-island specialists who provide educational seminars on issues that impact the Lagoon. Throughout the year, they cover topics such as aquaculture and oyster farms, septic system advances, climate change impacts and benefits of eelgrass propagation. They also host an annual "Light Up The Lagoon" night when boat owners and houses light up the Lagoon to create a magical sight.
