Embracing Sustainable Travel in New England

The Nobnocket Boutique Inn recognizes that it has a responsibility to minimize our environmental footprint and support actions to foster sustainability on Martha’s Vineyard. This commitment is about being a good steward of the 1.8 acres of land that make up the property and the wider local community. For travelers seeking an eco-friendly New England getaway, this inn offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to a local cause.

Most recently, the inn has started a Community Impact Fee to provide financial support to the Lagoon Pond Association. The Lagoon is the most at threat body of water on Martha’s Vineyard due to its heavy nitrogen loading. Learning this was a key 'wake-up' moment for the inn, which realized it should be actively giving back to assist the Association's programs.

Protecting the Lagoon Pond

The Lagoon Pond Association was formed in 1989 to protect the waterway. The organization has been a driver of change, helping neighboring towns improve septic systems and reduce fertilizer use. It also manages initiatives for continuous monitoring of water quality and the reintroduction of critical eelgrass back into the pond.

The Association also hosts a Speaker Series with local and off-island specialists who provide educational seminars on issues that impact the Lagoon. Throughout the year, they cover topics such as aquaculture and oyster farms, septic system advances, climate change impacts and benefits of eelgrass propagation. They also host an annual "Light Up The Lagoon" night when boat owners and houses light up the Lagoon to create a magical sight.

How Guests Can Make a Difference

The Nobnocket Boutique Inn makes it easy for guests to support these important local initiatives. The inn works through the Kind Traveler "Every Stay Gives Back" program, where guests give $3/night that is passed on 100% to the Lagoon Pond Association. In addition, the inn works with the Association's leadership to identify and provide hands-on volunteering opportunities for our guests.

By staying at the Nobnocket Boutique Inn, travelers are not only enjoying a beautiful Martha's Vineyard getaway but are also contributing to meaningful local conservation efforts. This approach to hospitality demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability on Martha's Vineyard.
