The rail trail that runs through Adams, MA definitely tops our list of things to do in Western Mass. Previously a railroad track, this perfectly paved bike path follows the river and ducks through lush leafy forest. Bust out the bikes and rollerblades or pack a picnic and get to strolling. Another superb place to play? Chuck around a frisbee, weave a daisy chain, or walk the dog in Northampton’s Childs Park.

Sip local.

The small-scale brewers at Wandering Star give you a reason to wander out to Pittsfield, while newcomers Tree House Brewing are blowing up the craft beer scene from their comfortable country position in Monson, MA.

Way better than an indoor mall, New England’s outlet centers let you shop different high quality brands all at once.

Volunteer to bring back a local icon.

If you’re looking for productive things to do in Western Mass on staycation, try volunteering at The Mohawk Theater or elsewhere. Turns out that this region is chock-full of architectural marvels in need of a little extra love.
