4th of July Fireworks

5 Can't-Miss Marches: New England's Hidden Gem, 4th of July Parades

Ever since the first independence day in 1777, the 4th of July has been a joyous day of music, food, fireworks, and most importantly, parades. Towns and communities all over the area join in on the fun in their red, white, and blue. Read on to find out which New England 4th of July parades you should attend this year.

Boston, Massachusetts

On July 4th, 1795, Paul Revere and Sam Adams laid the cornerstone for the Massachusetts State House in Boston, so naturally, this city knows how to celebrate its history! Both the Boston Harborfest and Boston Fireworks and Pops Concert have returned this year. Harborfest is the largest Independence Day festival in the United States and promises to be a weekend loaded with historical reenactments, Freedom Trail site tours, and live music. Plus, there’s entertainment like a classic car show, arts market, and USS Constitution turn-around cruise right in the harbor. You won’t want to miss all these 4th of July festivities in Massachusetts!

Where to Stay

Stay in downtown Boston and choose from some of the most historic and luxurious accommodations. We especially love the Boston Yacht Haven Inn & Marina as it is located on the waterfront and steps away from the Independence Day action. Or opt for Fifteen (XV) Beacon and view the famous fireworks on the Charles River from our private rooftop garden.

Bristol, Rhode Island

While Bristol starts their independence celebration on June 14th with Flag Day, it's their 4th of July festivities that are the main event. A concert series kicks off the weekend on Friday and Saturday with some family-friendly live music while Sunday serves up a fantastic fireworks show. Monday, the 4th, features patriotic exercises in the morning and the Annual Military, Civic, and Firemen’s Parade throughout the afternoon.

Where to Stay

Stay seaside in Newport or Providence this July and take a quick 30-minute drive to day trip in Bristol for the festivities.

Groton, Connecticut

Support local businesses, youth sports leagues, and civic organizations at the old-fashioned Groton Fourth of July Parade featuring fire engines, military personnel, antique cars, and local marching bands.

Where to Stay

We suggest staying in nearby Mystic at the Steamboat Inn or The Whaler’s Inn to get a true feel of what oceanside Connecticut is like. Take in the sea-blue views by night and in the morning, a short 15-minute drive will have you cheering parade-side in Groton.

Bristol, Vermont

The streets of Bristol line up with people during the Bristol, VT Fourth of July Celebration weekend. With a 5k road race, outhouse races, and a parade through town, there’s something for everyone. Bristol may be small but this community really knows how to show some love for their country.

Where to Stay

A 20-minute drive will get you to Bristol from the Swift House Inn, Sugarbush Resort, or Mad River Barn. Choose your adventure: classic white picket fence inn, mountain-side ski lodge, or rustic and luxurious barn. There’s really no wrong answer.

Bar Harbor, Maine

It’s no surprise that Bar Harbor’s Fourth of July party has been voted as one of the best 4th of July celebrations in America by platforms such as National Geographic and the Today Show. It pulls together the essence of summer in New England with a parade, live music, fireworks, and a marketplace fair.

Where to Stay

Don’t miss a second of the fun by staying in the heart of Bar Harbor at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel, Mira Monte Inn & Suites, or Bar Harbor Inn & Spa Resort. By lodging steps away from the celebration, you’re able to spend the weekend on your own schedule.
